Toulouse vs. PSG result: Messi assists Neymar and Mbappe as three-headed monster leads PSG back to winning ways

PSG may have slipped last week against AS Monaco, but the draw is a distant memory as they returned to winning ways with a 3-0 win over newly-promoted Toulouse.

The visitors in south France faced a pesky Toulouse side, but Lionel Messi pulled enough strings to see PSG out with all three points. The Argentine assisted both goals, as Neymar picked up the opener before halftime and Kylian Mbappe added the second soon after the break.

Neymar’s strike, initially ruled out by the offside flag before VAR overruled the call, gives the Brazilian seven goals on the season to lead Ligue 1 and pull him second in the Big 5 leagues behind only Erling Haaland of Man City.

Toulouse goalkeeper Maxime Dupe had an incredible match, making nine outstanding saves to keep the hosts within striking distance, but they never breached the PSG defense. The loss of defender Rasmus Nicolaisen due to injury at halftime was a boon to PSG who took charge of the match after the break.

Gianluigi Donnarumma was up to the task too, helping to preserve the clean sheet. PSG remain unbeaten through five league matches, while Toulouse remain on five points, good enough for 13th. The performance from Toulouse will give fans hope that they can remain up, even as Ligue 1 drops to 18 teams next season, leaving four teams facing the drop at the end of the campaign.

The Sporting News followed the Toulouse-PSG match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened.

Toulouse vs. PSG live updates, highlights, commentary

FULL-TIME: Toulouse 0-3 PSG

The first half was competitive, but the loss of Nicholaisen doomed Toulouse as PSG dominated the second half. The scoreline would have been even worse had it not been for Dupe’s brilliance, helping keep the end result somewhat respectable.

Lionel Messi’s trademark moments of magic proved critical as he assisted goals to his strike mates Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. It’s a positive for PSG who are now back to winning ways before Champions League play begins next week.

90th min: GOAL, PSG! Juan Bernat off the bench puts this one out of sight. The initial effort from Mbappe is laser that clatters the crossbar, but critically got Dupe to dive, putting the Toulouse goalkeeper on the turf. The rebound fell to Bernat and he pokes it past the recovering Dupe for PSG’s third.

Watch in the USA:

82nd min: Dupe adds another exclamation point to his highlight-reel showing with a kick-save on PSG substitute Ekitike. The young striker got free after a give-and-go with Mbappe, but Dupe says no. It’s his ninth save of the match, an outstanding performance.

79th min: Chance, Toulouse! Donnarumma denies Sylla as Toulouse search for a way back in the match. It comes off an incredibly embarrassing mistake by Sergio Ramos, who got lazy on the end line inside his own six-yard box, with his pocket picked by Sylla.

His bacon is saved by the PSG goalkeeper who works to keep the clean sheet. The Spaniard has a wink and a thumbs up to Donnarumma, thanking him for the assist.

73rd min: Chance, PSG! Another massive save from Dupe, this time with his face! Kylian Mbappe breaks free on the counter after the Toulouse forward possession, and he’s free on goal. Dupe comes out to challenge, and closes the French international down. By the time Mbappe got a shot off, Dupe was right in his face, and the effort clattered the Toulouse goalkeeper in his noggin.

Even the PSG social media account gives credit where it’s due.

72nd min: Toulouse hold a spell of attacking possession, and the PSG defense scatters a bit, but nothing comes of it. A cross from the right is dangerous but can’t find a man in the middle.

67th min: Mbappe hits the crossbar, but he’s well offside on the receipt. Christophe Galtier makes a change, with Marco Verratti coming off, replaced by Renato Sanches. Neymar is also withdrawn for Hugo Ekitike. With about 25 minutes left, the PSG boss feels confident to bring on some fringe players and rest a few key starters.

61st min: Chance, PSG! Now Vitinha wants in on the action, and he unleashes a wonderful strike from distance, but Dupe produces an excellent save. Toulouse may be trailing by a pair, but it’s not because of their goalkeeper, who’s been excellent to keep the match where it is.

50th min: GOAL, PSG! Mbappe gets on the board himself with PSG’s second. It’s once again created by Messi, who ducked and weaved down the left side of the penalty area, leaving Toulouse defenders in his wake. All three PSG attackers have contributed in big ways today!

Watch in the USA:

49th min: Messi takes a free-kick, and it’s a curler destined for the top-left corner, but Dupe is there to make an outstanding save! It’s an athletic one, leaping up and to his right.

46th min: The second half is now under way as PSG look to continue their assault that concluded the opening 45 minutes.

Toulouse have been forced into a change at the break, with Nicolaisen coming off and Logan Costa in his place. The only explanation for that change is an injury, as the new Toulouse defender was excellent through the first half.

HALFTIME: Toulouse 0-1 PSG

It’s an utter onslaught from PSG, but for the most part, the hosts weathered the storm. Toulouse had moments going forward too, but it does feel like the floodgates will open eventually.

45th min: Chance, PSG! As halftime nears, the PSG pressure on their newly-promoted opponents continues to build. Neymar shoots from an angle on the left, but it’s low and right at Dupe.

37th min: Chance, PSG! Neymar has the ball in the back of the net, but it’s ruled out as the flag goes up! VAR will certainly have a look at this, because the replay shows the Brazilian looks very onside. The delivery is a vertical ball from Messi that cuts right through the heart of the Toulouse defensive line.

On review…it’s given! GOAL, PSG! The delivery is a brilliant one from Messi, as you’d expect, with just one touch after receiving from Verratti. It’s the seventh goal already for Neymar on the Ligue 1 season.

Watch in the USA:

34th min: Nicholaisen continues his battle with Mbappe, winning a foul in the penalty area as Mbappe tries to go around him. It’s a questionable one, and probably could have been given as a penalty, with both players battling for the ball. Toulouse aren’t backing down, and remain level.

26th min: PSG continue to pour on the pressure, and Mbappe goes down in the penalty area under a challenge from Rasmus Nicolaisen. The referee waves it away, and the Toulouse defender seems to come away with the worst of the tackle.

He’s eventually up and ready to continue, but VAR is having a look at the tackle. It’s a very long look, but eventually no recommendation is given to the official and play continues.

17th min: Chance, PSG! Lionel Messi shoots with his left, and it skids just wide! Messi is screaming for a corner, and replay shows the shot did clip Diarra on the way by, but it’s given as a goal kick. Toulouse have so far weathered the storm.

9th min: Chance, Toulouse & PSG! It’s another save from Donnarumma! Dallinga shoots again, this time from a tight angle on the opposite side. What a chance!

Down the other end, an immediate response from PSG, but Messi drags his shot just wide! Then, off the restart, Mbappe tries an audacious outside-foot effort from close range, but Maxime Dupe makes a great reflex save! What a wild start to this match!

5th min: Toulouse are showing intent! Gianluigi Donnarumma keeps out a tight-angle effort on the right from Thijs Dallinga as the hosts venture forward for the first time.

2nd min: Chance, PSG! There are early signs of a PSG onslaught, and it’s a miracle there’s no opening goal inside two minutes. Mbappe enters the penalty area under pressure, and while he can’t find the back of the net, the ball comes to Messi. The Argentine star also sees his effort blocked by the numerous Toulouse defenders scrambling to keep out the opener.

1st min: The match is under way from southern France! It’s a David vs. Golaith matchup in Ligue 1.

Pre-Match: Toulouse vs. PSG (kickoff 7:30pm local CEST)

4 mins to kick: PSG were held for the first time this season after a 1-1 draw against AS Monaco last time out. That same Monaco side just went and lost to Troyes. Ligue 1 is in for a wild ride this year, and Monaco are at the heart of that chaos.

8 mins to kick: Toulouse are up against some brutal streaks today. Not only have they failed to win any of their last 10 home games in the French top flight, they’ve only won once in their last 20 games against PSG. A tall task!

27 mins to kick: With transfer speculation rife and PSG offloading names in bulk, Director of Football Luis Campos tells the media that he’s still waiting on just one name to add to the roster before their incoming business is complete. Feel free to speculate who that might be.

45 mins to kick: The PSG lineup is finally out, and it’s mostly as expected for PSG. There are two wrinkles; Nordi Mukiele starts in place of Presnel Kimpembe at center-back, while Achraf Hakimi is rested, with Danilo starting in his place. That could signal a formational change to a traditional four-back system, with Mukiele at full-back and Danilo in midfield alongside regular starters Vitinha and Marco Verratti.

24-year-old Mukiele joined this summer from RB Leipzig and gets his first start after four appearances off the bench.

60 mins to kick: Still waiting on the PSG lineup, but Toulouse have their starters out. Captain Brecht Dejaegere drops to the bench, leaving van den Boomen to wear the armband. He’s replaced by left-back Oliver Zanden, meaning Toulouse are going with five defenders.

96 mins to kick: PSG are trimming the fat on the squad as the transfer window closes. Striker Mauro Icardi, who has been poor during his time in the French capital, is reportedly negotiating with Turkish club Galatasaray on a loan with no option to buy. Full-back Layvin Kurzawa is having a medical with Premier League club Fulham, winger Julian Draxler is reportedly in negotiations with Benfica, and Abdou Diallo is on his way to RB Leipzig on loan.

They’ve already completed deals to send midfielder Leandro Paredes to Juventus on loan and defender Thilo Kehrer to West Ham. It’s a busy few days for the PSG transfer crew!

120 mins to kick: Kylian Mbappe joined PSG five years ago on this day in a massive deal from AS Monaco. What a signing he’s been! However, he’s still missing a coveted Champions League title. With the Champions League group stage starting next week, PSG will want to be in top form to begin European play.

Toulouse vs. PSG lineups, team news

Toulouse suffered a massive blow to start the year as British striker Rhys Healey, who won the Ligue 2 top goalscorer award last season, tore his ACL just last week. That moves new signing Thijs Dallinga, a 22-year-old Dutch youth international signed this summer from Eredivisie club Excelsior, into a starting striker role. Dutch midfielder Branco van den Boomen will also be expected to contribute goals (12 last season in Ligue 2).

There’s one captain Brecht Dejaegere drops to the bench, leaving van den Boomen to wear the armband. He’s replaced by left-back Oliver Zanden, meaning Toulouse are going with five defenders.

Toulouse starting lineup (5-2-3): Dupe (GK) — Zanden, Diarra, Nicolaisen, Rouault, Desler — van den Boomen, Spierings — Ratao, Dallinga, Aboukhlal.

Toulouse subs (9): Haug (GK), Sylla, Costa, Keben, Genreau, Dejaegere, Chaibi, Onaiwu, Begraoui.

Christophe Galtier has established a clear starting XI in his first few weeks at PSG, with few injury concerns to hamper his consistency. That lineup hasn’t featured many of the players who are on their way out of the club in the final hours of the transfer window.

There are two changes, with new summer signing Nordi Mukiele sees the field at right-back in place of Achraf Hakimi, while Danilo comes into the midfield to replace center-back Presnel Kimpembe. That signals a formation switch to a 4-3-3.

PSG starting lineup (4-3-3): Donnarumma (GK) — Mendes, Ramos, Marquinhos, Mukiele — Verratti, Vitinha, Danilo — Neymar, Mbappe, Messi.

PSG subs (9): Navas (GK), Rico (GK), Hakimi, Bernat, Bitshiabu, Sanches, Zaire-Emery, Ekitike.

Toulouse vs. PSG betting odds, lines, picks & prediction

Odds via DraftKings (USA), Sports Interaction (Canada), & SkyBet (UK).

Under their current Qatari owners, PSG have not only beaten Toulouse on a regular basis, they’ve crushed them. Aside from a pair of negative results in 2016/17, PSG have won 22 of the last 23 against Toulouse in all competitions, with a 1-1 draw in 2014 the only blemish. Across those 22 wins, PSG have outscored Toulouse by a sizable 52-10 margin.

Toulouse started this season well with four points from the first two matches, but the defense has fallen apart, conceding five times over their last two matches against Lorient and Nantes. The goals total is set high at 3.5, but that’s still easily attainable in a match between two teams that love scoring goals.

  • Pick: Over 3.5 total goals (-125 on DraftKings)
  • Prediction: Toulouse 1-4 PSG
